Madre Antigua II: A Tribute to Ancestral Wisdom and the Essence of Connection

Madre Antigua II 5” x 7” x 1 1/2” Acrylic on Plaster, Cowrie Shells, Wood

Madre Antigua, or “Ancient Mother,” is a powerful artistic homage to Niki Lopez’s Latina and Caribbean roots, harkening to the lands of Panama, Cuba, and Jamaica. This mixed-media piece resonates with ancient tribal symbolism, capturing the essence of the Androgynous and the Otherworldly, while offering a vivid reminder of our guardians and ancestral traditions.

The centerpiece of this artwork incorporates a small sculpture, the “Egungun Faces of Ancestors,” handcrafted with plaster, clay, and acrylic paint. Like the series itself, the sculpture symbolizes the connection to our ancestors, a bridge between past and future. The Egungun face reveals its hand-carved scars, each representing a unique journey towards healing old wounds and traumas.

Cowrie shells, also known as the mouthpiece of the Orishas in Yoruba practices, adorn this artwork. These shells hold a sacred role, facilitating communication with the Orishas, and carry rich cultural symbolism. They have played vital roles in Santeria, serving as essential tools for priests and priestesses. Within Mende culture, cowrie shells are recognized as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth, and wealth.

“Madre Antigua II” invites viewers to explore their own roots, unearth the hidden treasures of their ancestry, and embrace the complexities of culture and heritage. The artwork’s captivating visual allure, combined with its profound spiritual narrative, fosters a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of humanity across time and space.

This artwork serves as a powerful reminder that we are all, in some way, connected to the ancient and the otherworldly, our guardians and the infinite mysteries of the universe. Through “Madre Antigua II,” Niki Lopez invites us to celebrate the beauty and diversity of our shared human journey, bringing a piece of history into our present moment.
